Cranleigh School in Surrey

When Cranleigh School in Surrey needed to arrange to replace  60 windows and doors and install curtain walling in one of  their student accommodation buildings, they knew that they needed to appoint a contractor who understood their unique requirements.

And at the top of that list of requirements was the need for absolute reliability. The work had to be done during the summer holidays and finished in time for the start of the school year. No delays. No excuses. And they knew that the only way to ensure absolute reliability is to deal directly with the manufacturer.

This is because most contractors source their products from third parties (manufacturers). Very few actually do the manufacturing themselves. The contractor has no control over the supply chain, so if things go wrong, all the contractor can do is shrug, apologise and say, “not my fault.”

This is exactly the sort of thing that happens with monotonous regularity on building sites, but would have been disastrous for Cranleigh School. AWL planned the project with the school from product specification details to manufacture and installation programming.

AWL and it’s sister company’s extensive experience with school refurbishments meant that AWL was able to advise at the specification stage on matters such as having the double glazed sealed units manufactured with toughened glass inside and laminated glass outside.

This goes well beyond current building legislation, but it keeps active children safe whilst inside and ensures that the odd miss-aimed football bounces off the outside glass without damage.  AWL also used fire escape hinges on every opening window. Again, its not a legal requirement, but it is priceless peace of mind.


The successful completion of a school project means planning with military precision. The first stage begins before manufacture. AWL arranged delivery of all of the framework profile and hardware long before the commencement of manufacturing, so there could be no delays.

Plenty of time was allotted to the manufacturing process so that  the new windows were ready well before the start of the summer break.

This only left installation crewing levels to be established. And extra crewing was made available in case of problems with the weather. AWL planners even positioned skips to minimise any mess or disruption.

The Product

Aluminium windows and doors were the obvious choice for Cranleigh School. AWL use the Smarts Architectural Aluminium system. As well as being one of the largest suppliers in the industry, Smarts are widely regarded as being the most innovative and respected.

Aluminium is strong, light and durable. Its great strength means that frames can be made thinner, giving a more elegant appearance and allowing more natural light to flood into the room. And that strength also gives added security, which perfectly compliments the high performance locking systems that AWL use as standard.

The powder coated surfaces are guaranteed against fading and discolouration for 25 years, so Cranleigh School’s maintenance department can busy themselves with other things.

The unique thermal break in the framework coupled with energy efficient double glazed sealed units will keep the children warm and reduce the school’s energy bills.
